UI/UX Design: Why Feedback Matters in Interface Design
Learn how timely, understandable feedback helps users know what happened, what changed, and what to do next.
There are three types of feedback: auditory, haptic, and visual. Auditory feedback uses sound to acknowledge an interaction, haptic feedback uses touch to communicate information, and visual feedback uses visuals to indicate what’s happening.
When designing feedback, designers must consider the timing, duration, strength/intensity, and location of the feedback. All of these factors will affect how noticeable and intrusive the feedback is. designers must also ensure that the feedback is consistent with the rest of the interface and with the users’ expectations.
Designers have a few goals for providing feedback: information goals, such as acknowledging an interaction or providing guidance; hedonic goals, such as making the interface fun and entertaining; and emotional goals, such as reducing anxiety or building confidence. The type of feedback used will be determined by which goal is most important for a particular interaction.
Conclusion:
Feedback is an important part of user interface design because it allows designers to provide information to users in a way that is both noticeable and non-intrusive. By considering the timing, duration, strength/intensity, and location of the feedback, designers can create an effective and efficient user interface.
